FOR PSYCH MAJORS
If you are reading this tab you are a psych major interested in pursuing a career in a psychology related field. Welcome! Here are some tips I wish I had received early on as a psych major.
First, it is important to note that there are multiple routes to pursuing a psychology related degree.
Check out the following degree options:
LCSW
LMHC
PSy.D
Ph.D.
LPC
Important tips for your freshman year:
- Begin to look for internships that may be of interest in the specific fields you are interested in
- Seek out netowrking opportunities to get to know people in the field. This can be done by attending conferences and by utilixing Linkedin
- Begin to develop relationships with your professors. Show up to office hours and feel free to ask them for internship opportunities
- This is your time to explore different interests that will help you hone in on what youd like to focus on
Important tips for your sophmore year:
-If you think you might be interested in doing research, now is the time to get involved! The earlier the better
- Seek out other internships that will help you broaden your horizons as a student and make you a more well rounded applicant in the future
- Get involved in volunteer work related to what you are interested in
- Keep your grades up!
-Seek out mentorship for various areas of your life as you think about what you want your life to look like.
Important tips for your junior year:
- If you have not already, begin to think about what your post grad life will look like. Assk yourself the following:
Do you want to pursue graduate school?
Do you want to focus on a masters, or PHd program?
How have the past 2 years shaped your passion for psychology or other disciplines? What makes you the happiest to do?
Important tips for your senior year:
- You do not have to apply straight away to a graduate program in psychology but you also can! It is important to think about what is best for you.
-Many take a year or two to work in a research lab as a manager or research assistant to gain more experience and also save up money before grad school.
- Looking into post-bach programs could also be a good idea.
- Create a reasonable plan to begin studying for your GREs or any exams you may need
- Look into waivers for grad school applications
- Look for graduate fellowships to make you a more competitive applicant

Letters of Recommendation & CV's
Tips for letters of Recommendation:
- You should request your letter of recommendation from a new recommender atleast 2 months in advance. If it is someone who has already written a letter for you, then you can just reach out to them and let them know you are applying to a new program and give them atleast 3 weeks to submit a revised letter for you.
-You want a recommendation letter from the people who know the best in multiple areas but this also depends on the place you are applying as well. For example, if you are applying to a graduate program if may be important to have letters from internships, professors, and relevant volunteer positions to speak to all of your relevant experiences
- Send your recommenders your personal statement as well details about each internship opportunity you would like them to highlight!
- Chek the application submission process for what you are applying to. Some instutions have varying deadlines and rules about when a recomender can submit a letter.
Tips for your CV:
- Find a professional template and seek out help in editing your resume or cover letter
- Move the most important sections to the top based on what you are applying to
